Money stolen from 3 safes recovered, 5 arrested

Police have recovered money stolen from three safes in 6th and 10th floor of MU Building late Saturday night, and have arrested five suspects.

Police said that they were alerted to the crime when patrolling specialist operations officers observed a taxi being driven suspiciously at around 2:05 am, early Sunday morning.

Police stopped the car from Majeedhee Magu and found equipment used in robberies when they searched the car, leading them to further investigate the case.

The car has been impounded by police.

Police said they had found out the location of the robbery – MU Building, which lies next to Filaa Building in the market area – from information they collected after stopping the taxi.

The robbers had broken into three safes in two floors of MU Building, taking over a million rufiyaa and foreign currency.

“The exact figure is not clear yet. But police and the owner of the money are working on calculating the exact figure,” said police.

The robbers had broken into the building after binding and gaging the security guard on duty.

Police conducted a special operation to search for the robbers – seizing the car, recovering the money, and arresting five suspects.

The stolen money was found hidden in an air vent in G. Burakige.

Police said that they were treating the robbery as a high-priority case, and that officers were still operating on the scene to collect more evidence.
