Nihan denies attempting to illegally arrest President

Chief Magistrate of A. Dh. Maamigili Court, Ahmed Nihan has denied the charge against him that he attempted to illegally arrest President Abdulla Yameen.

The charge against him reads that he met with former Prosecutor General Muhuthaz Muhsin and a group of other individuals who arrives by speedboat to Maamigili at approximately 2:45 am on February 8.

It reads that Nihan and the group of individuals had opened Maamigili Magistrate Court, and then used the court’s laptop to download a bogus court order by name of “Maafushi Amuru” using the email address [email protected] and its password – provided to him by Muhuthaz.

He had than made required changes to “Maafushi Amuru”.

He has been charged under Anti-Terrorism Act.

During Wednesday’s hearing, Nihan said that he fully understood the charges against him, and plead not guilty.

Additional charges against Nihan include using the authority of his position inappropriately, doing something inappropriate in performing his official responsibility, and creating a phony document.

He has denied all the charges against him.

Speaking during the opportunity provided to defense to talk about the three charges; Nihan’s defense lawyer Husnu Suood said that they could not provide a proper response until prosecution provided them all the documents they wished to submit as evidence.

Husnu Suood said that they had so far not received any document except for Nihan’s police testimony.

Prosecution said that they wished to submit confidential evidence and therefore requested that they be allowed to submit evidence in writing.

The judge approved the request, and said that defense would be provided the evidence as soon the court received the documents.

Former PG Muhuthaz Muhsin has also been charged in the case.
