Imran, Tholhath transferred to house arrest for one month

Former Defense Minister Tholhath Ibrahim Kaleyfaanu and Adhaalath Party leader Imran Abdulla – both imprisoned at Himmafushi Asseyri Jail – have been transferred to house arrest for a period of one month.

An official from Maldives Correctional Service reported to “Sun” that Imran and Tholhath were transferred to house arrest on Tuesday to do some repair work on where they are kept in jail.

Tholhath is serving a 10-year jail sentence for complicity in illegal imprisonment of Chief Justice of Criminal Court, Abdulla Mohamed, during former President Mohamed Nasheed’s administration.

Meanwhile, Imran is serving a 12-year jail sentence after Criminal Court ruled that protesters participating in opposition demonstration on May 1, 2015 had attacked police officers and damaged public property due to Imran inciting hatred toward President Abdulla Yameen and his government in the speech he gave during the demonstration.
