Majlis approves joining Paris Agreement, bill to appoint 2 Deputy PGs

People’s Majlis on Monday gave approval for Maldives to joining the Paris Agreement – compiled to fight climate change, and the amendment to Prosecutor General's Act so that the Prosecutor General of the country can appoint two or more Deputy Prosecutor Generals to assist him/her.

67 members present during the Majlis session voted in approval of Maldives signing up for Paris Agreement.

Paris Agreement was compiled during COP 21 meeting held among members of United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.

President Abdulla Yameen in his letter to Majlis read that as per stated in Maldivian Constitution government needed to gain support of Majlis before joining any international agreement.

Meanwhile, the bill to appoint two Deputy PGs was passes by Majlis with the vote of 50 members.

Only 18 members voted against the bill.

The bill, proposed on behalf of government by Vilingili MP Saud Hussain says that the prosecutor general himself/herself had the authority to hire and fire deputy prosecutor generals.

And that he/she had the authority to appoint a deputy prosecutor general or prosecutor generals to assist him/her in his/her work.

MP Saud said that the change would not cause any hindrances to work carried out by prosecution. And that the law was being revised so that there would be no barrier to the two deputy prosecutor generals prosecuting someone if the prosecutor general him/herself was not available.
