Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has said that the Timeline published by the Commission of National Inquiry (CNI) reveals that the government was changed through a coup, and that President Dr Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik should therefore resign.
MDP Spokesperson and Maafannu Uthuru MP Imthiyaz Fahmy said today at a press conference at Male’ City Hall, that MDP does not recognize the CNI, but the Timeline nonetheless reveals that the government was changed through a coup.
And since President Waheed had told the international community that he would resign if the CNI’s investigation reveals that the government was changed through a coup, he should now submit his resignation.
Imthiyaz, on behalf of MDP, called for the immediate resignation of the President.
When asked if MDP believes that the information revealed by the CNI is true, and whether MDP has confidence in the CNI, Imthiyaz said that the CNI is not independent, but it is important to consider their report since it exposes that the government was changed through a coup.
“What we are saying is that the commission that was initially formed was not independent. The other point we want to make is that even though we don’t recognize the commission, their report shows that it was a coup. Therefore we think it should be considered,” Imthiyaz said.
He expressed hope that the newly composed commission will take this information into account in its investigations.
