People’s Majlis Committee on Independent Institutions has passes the bill sent by government to revise Prosecutor General Act to allow for appointment of two deputy prosecutor generals.
The bill was passes with the vote of majority of committee members in attendance.
No changes to the bill were brought during the committee stage.
The bill, proposed on behalf of government by Vilingili MP Saud Hussain says that the prosecutor general himself/herself had the authority to hire and fire deputy prosecutor generals.
And that he/she had the authority to appoint a deputy prosecutor general or prosecutor generals to assist him/her in his/her work.
MP Saud said that the change would not cause any hindrances to work carried out by prosecution. And that the law was being revised so that there would be no barrier to the two deputy prosecutor generals prosecuting someone if the prosecutor general him/herself was not available.
