Maamigili Court Chief Magistrate charged with terrorism

A. Dh. Maamigili Court Chief Magistrate Ahmed Nihan has been charged with terrorism for allegedly attempting to illegally apprehend Maldivian President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom.

The charge against Nihan reads that he had met with former Prosecutor General Muhuthaz Muhsin and others who arrived at Maamigili by speedboat at around 2:45, February 8.

Nihan had allegedly opened the court with them; was given the email address – [email protected] – and its password by Muhuthaz, accessed the email account using the court laptop and downloaded a file prepared like a court order titled “Maafushi Amuru”.

He then made changes to the file and forged a court order for President Yameen’s arrest, conspired to arrest the President, and went through with the plans.

In addition to being charged under Anti-Terrorism Act, Nihan has also been charged with taking improper advantage of authority received through position, indulging in an improper act in performing official duties, and creation of a sham document and presenting it as valid.

Charges have also been raised against former Prosecutor General Muhuthaz Muhsin.
