Mohamed Iqbal from Nooraaneege in N. Miladhoo - convicted of attacking a police officer during opposition protest on May 1, 2015 – has appealed his seven-year jail sentence.
Iqbal’s lawyer, Ahmed Nazim Abdul Sattar has confirmed this to “Sun”.
State prosecution said that Sargent Abdul Rahman Hussein had been driving from north to south on Chandhanee Magu trying to control the protestors gathered near Iskandhar School sometime between 10 pm to 10:30 pm, when he was pushed off onto the ground by the protestors.
Criminal Court ruled last Monday that testimony from State witnesses proved that Iqbal had hit the officer with the helmet in his hand after the officer was pushed to the ground.
Meanwhile, Adhaalath Party leader Imran Abdulla has been sentenced to 12 years in prison, after Criminal Court ruled that his speech during the protest had instigated the violence.
Other protestors have also been charged over the attack on the police officer.
