Appeal hearings on Hana’s death sentence ends

Appeal hearings for Fathmath Hana from Rihab in Sh. Goidhoo – who was sentenced to death after being found guilty of murdering lawyer and author Ahmed Najeeb with her lover Ahmed Murrath – have ended.

Hana was sentenced to death by Criminal Court over three years ago, on July 19, 2012.

Appeal hearings at High Court were concluded two times previously, with the final hearing having to be held again each time with the changes brought to bench of judges overseeing the case.

In the hearing held on Monday, Judge Abdul Ghanee Mohamed was replaced by Judge Abdulla Didi.

At Monday’s hearing, both State prosecutor and Hana’s defense lawyer said that did not want to clarify anything more.

The bench of judges overseeing the case was led by Judge Ali Sameer and joined by Judge Abdulla Didi, Judge Abdulla Hameed, Judge Shujau Usman and Judge Abdul Rauf Ismail.

Murrath also appealed his death sentence, but lost the appeal when High Court ruled in support of the death sentence issued by Criminal Court.
