Warning issued as weather worsens

National Disaster Management Center has issued warning for everyone to be prepared for possible flooding as Met Office forecasts heavy rain and strong winds.

NDMC said that Met Office had issued a yellow alert for central and southern atolls and had forecasted heavy rain and thunderstorms until 1:20 pm, Thursday. And therefore advised that measures be taken to deal with flooding and other damage from bad weather.

NDMC also issued a list of measures that could be taken in preparation. Which is as follows:

* Take preventive measures against flooding, such as creating barriers using sand sacks.

* Prepare for flooding and store household and electronic possessions in a safe, dry place.

* Brace for strong winds and reinforce poorly constructed buildings, and roofs.

* Being in a safe building when there is strong wind and heavy rain.

* Fix possessions so that it is not swept away with strong wind.

* Being careful when travelling via sea transportation and attentive of advice provided by relevant institutions.

* Being attentive of information relevant to weather broadcasted through media centers by government.

NDCM also advised that drinking water be collected to prepare for upcoming Iruvai Monsoon. And that water collection units be cleaned.
