The President Abdulla Yameen Adbul Gayoom has said that an amendment to the relevant laws would be presented to the Parliament within the next week to allow the pursuit of criminal charges for slander.
President said this in his speech at the opening ceremony of the Hulhumalé Orphanage.
“…So the current details on slander within the session, with God’s will, in the next week, would go to the Parliament.” President Abdulla Yameen said.
President Abdulla Yameen said that there is no reason not to punish the slaughter of reputation when we are punishing for theft.
“The most proud and revered right is his reputation. There is no problem when it’s violated. So that won’t happen during this government.” The President said.
The President said that punishing people for slander is not punishing the innocent and they would be punished for violating the rights of another and needs to be reminded of the severity of the crime.
President Yameen said that if the Maldivian community is to be a law abiding, respectful and kind one, a cure for things like slander has to be found.
“Even to the most servicing man, citizens saying things to is nothing. That cannot be.” The President said.
