Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Parliamentary Group Leader Ibrahim Mohamed Solih (Ibu) has said that discussions are underway to take action three MDP members who voted against the party’s three line whip.
Hoarafushi MP Ahmed Rasheed, Komandoo MP Hussain Waheed and Maradhoo MP Hassan Adil voted against the three line whip yesterday on the issue of no-confidence on Parliament Speaker Abdullah Shahid.
Ibu said that the MPs will be asked for the reasons why they voted in favour of Shahid.
“First we will ask them why they voted in favour of Shahid. Then the Parliamentary Group will make a decision, and send the issue to the committee in charge of taking action,” the PG Group Leader said.
He said that a similar procedure was to be implemented following Fuvahmulah MP Shifag Mufeed voting in favour of the government on the vote to grant approval for ministers, but Shifag left MDP before any action was taken.
Mohamed Rasheed and Hussain Waheed said that they voted in favour of Shahid by their own free will.
When asked if he is anxious about the action MDP might take against him, Mohamed Rasheed said that every person has the right to choose the party he wishes to represent, and even thought they are Members of Parliament, they have the right to vote as they want. He added that he would always vote in favour of Shahid, regardless of any three line whip.
