Court orders for people living in Malé assigned to Criminal Court only

Supreme Court has decided that only the Criminal Court would be issuing court orders for people living in Malé City regarding criminal cases.

A circular issued by the Supreme Court today said that the court orders regarding criminal activity and cases are to protect and not conflict the basic rights of the people and the tranquility of the society.

The circular said to ensure the misuse of the justice system, six points must be reviewed when issuing court orders and steps.

They are:

• The purpose and reason for the court order

• The address of the subject of the court order

• Employment of the subject of the court order

• The importance of the court order

• The validity of the laws and cause for the court order

• The duration validity of the court order

According to the circular, the Supreme Court decided that so long as ruled otherwise, court orders for people living in Malé (including Villimalé and Hulhumalé) can only be issued by the Criminal Court.

While the Criminal Court has been assigned the sole authority for court orders for the Malé City, the Police are investigating a forged court order for the arrest of President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom.

Chief Superintendent of Police Mohamed Riyaz said that a group of people travelled from Male’ to an island at around 3 am Sunday morning and tried to issue a court order with a judge working in a magistrate court in an atoll.
