Ziyath fired from MMPRC 102 days after his arrest

Abdulla Ziyath has been dimissed today from his position as Managing Director of Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) a 102 days after his arrest.

President of Privatization Board, Mohamed Nizar sent out a tweet today to announce the decision.

When Sun Media asked Nizar if Ziyath would be paid for the 102 days in detention, he said that the board has not yet made a decision on that.

Ziyath was arrested on 23 October 2015. His residence at H. Hiyaa Koalhi, was searched by the Police under a court order before his arrest and some items were confiscated from the house.

The reason for warranting the search stated in the Criminal Court order was that the house contained devices used for listening to phone calls and information obtained by hacking emails.

Police also searched the office of MMPRC on October 17 and since then Ziyath was taken to the Police on four different occasions.

Ziyath is currently facing one count of embezzling USD one million at accessory to embezzling USD five million. And the trail of the embezzling of USD one million has already begun.

Ziyath was charged for accepting a cheque for USD 1 million from Ebony Private Limited after the company was leased a Malé atoll lagoon to company after which the state did not receive the money.

Ziyath is charged with reference to Article 215 (a), under Article 210 (b) of the Penal Code. At the first hearing Judge Abdulla Mohamed said that the State had requested anonymity for the witnesses.
