Fire at the administrative office of Parliament

A fire has broken out at the administrative office of the Parliament.

Information Officer of Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF), Major Adnaan Mohamed told Sun Media that fire and rescue teams are now active at the scene following a report of smoke coming out of the administrative office of the Parliament around 4:58 p.m.

“It is unclear yet, how this took place. Since smoke was coming out from the administration of the parliament was reported at 4:48 p.m. military has been active in the area since 5:08 p.m.” Major Andaan said.

The Assistant Editor of Sun Online, Ahmed Azif at the scene reported witness accounts as “a loud noise” was heard before the smoke started. He said that there are still traces of smoke still inside the Parliament.

Major Adnaan said that although smoke is present inside the Parliament building, a fire has not yet been discovered. And it is unclear of an explosion took place or not.

“Our firemen are still active inside. They are now working to clear the smoke inside Parliament.” Major Adnaan said.
