Meedhoo MP Ahmed Siyam has said that the Maldives is suffering due to the illegal practices of its future leaders
Speaking on the bill to remove the article of the civil service act which states that a civil servant will lose his employment if he contests for a political post, Siyam said that when one party comes into power, the opposing parliament members attempt to create hatred in society.
He said that several religions exist in our neighbouring countries, but they do not stab or harm one another. The fact that we in a 100 percent Muslim country murder, rob, and deny one other their rights, is not acceptable.
“Christians, Buddhists, Muslims, Jews, Hindus walk side by side on the streets in our neighbouring countries. They don’t stab each other. They are not Muslim countries. But we as a hundred percent Muslim country have people killing children, robbing people, denying people their rights – this is not something the citizens of this country want,” Siyam said.
He said that a country’s progress depends on peace and order within the society. He also said that no former leader of Maldives had ruled the country within the limits of the Constitution and laws, and that this trend will lead to the citizens ending up in poverty.
“In my forty years I have not seen our elected leaders ruling the country within the limits of the Constitution and laws. The laws have to be obeyed. Otherwise people will end up in poverty,” Siyam said.
