Concerns of the Commonwealth and UK regarding Maldives can be resolved: President

President Dr Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik has said that the concerns of the Commonwealth and UK regarding Maldives will be resolved, after they are briefed even further on the political situation in the Maldives during his visit to the UK.

Speaking to the media prior to his departure to participate in the diamond jubilee celebrations of the Queen of the Commonwealth Realms, Elizabeth II, the President said that he will have the opportunity to meet the British Prime Minister and leaders of Commonwealth.

“We have already explained the situation to the Commonwealth to some extent. Even more information has been provided to the foreign office. The British government has been listening to us more since we did that,” the President said.

Referring to the Commission of National Inquiry (CNI), the President said that the government had accepted the latest nomination by Nasheed, but that the government does not intend to announce it just yet.

“We do not intend to announce anything yet. The Commonwealth might announce something even today,” the President said.

He said that there are certain concerns surrounding the new person nominated by Nasheed, however, the government has accepted and hopes to progress with this person.

“This person has also made political statements now and then. But we will not reject this person,” the President said.

He said that the Chairperson of CNI Ismail Shafeeu is capable for the job, and will not be removed from this post.
