Imprisoned former Maldivian President Mohamed Nasheed’s lawyers have said that he doesn’t want anyone from his family signing any document that holds the person responsible if he doesn’t return back to the country after travelling to UK for his surgery.
Speaking during press conference held at MDP Office on Sunday night, Nasheed’s lawyer Hisan Hussein said that Nasheed was made to sign two documents presented by Maldives Correctional Service that night. And that Nasheed signed the documents in the presence of four of his lawyers and three Correctional Service officials.
Things Nasheed agreed to by signing the documents:
• To keep government informed as to where he is staying for medical care.
• To return back to Maldives within 30 days after his medical treatment.
• To supply government with information as to how his treatment is going if so requested.
• That a member from his family who signs the document hand Nasheed over to
Correctional Service after he returns to Maldives.
His lawyer Hassan Latheef said that Nasheed signed and dated the documents and gave his fingerprint.
According to Hassan Latheef, Nasheed told him Correctional Service officials had said a member of his family needed to sign the document saying that he or she will be held liable if
Nasheed doesn’t return back to Maldives. But that Nasheed refused to have anyone from his family signing a document holding him or her liable.
When asked whether Nasheed’s family had refused to sign the document, Hisan said that it was Nasheed himself who didn’t want anyone in his family signing such a document.
She said that Nasheed’s family had said they had not received such a document so far.
She said that according to Correctional Service, they wanted a member of Nasheed’s family to sign the document in accordance with procedure surrounding granting inmates’ temporary leave from prison. But that no one from Nasheed’s family can sign a document that would require him or her to be imprisoned in Male’.
