CP: Police should not be involved in politics

Commissioner of Police Ahmed Arif said on Thursday that police should not be involved in politics or have any “special” arrangement with any politician.

Meeting Maldivian police force for the first time since he was appointed to the post, CP Arif said that all police officers and employees should maintain professionalism.

He said that police should respect the rights of the common people and maintain equality when serving them. He said that it was the biggest duty of police that they serve the people with kindness, with a smile on their faces.

He called out for all police officers to maintain integrity and honesty in the work they do.

CP said that Maldives Police Service was an institution empowered through law, that that served the people equally and justly, barred from all political influence.

He said that some police officers, however, gave a blind eye to set regulations and were influenced by some politicians.

He said that no police officer or employee would be given the opportunity for that under his watch.

Former CP Hussein Waheed had been removed from his post after President Abdulla Yameen said he was exuding political influence to the police force.
