Without the fingerprint President Nasheed would lose MDP membership as well

MDP has said that among the members that need to resubmit their party membership forms with the fingerprint by 31 December includes the President of the Party and the former President of the Maldives, Mohamed Nasheed.

Elections Commission has decided to dismiss the membership of those without the fingerprint on the forms from their respective Political Party. The period of six months given by the Commission to resubmit the forms with the fingerprints would expire on Thursday.

The Elections Commission said that those without fingerprints on their political party membership forms would be terminated from the parties after the period expires.

MDP said that President Nasheed’s fingerprint has not been submitted yet and so has sent a letter to the Commissioner of Prisons to facilitate the former President’s fingerprint on his MDP membership form.

MDP requested to facilitate a meeting between the former President Nasheed and the Vice President of MDP Mohamed Shifaz, Deputy Chairperson Ali Niyaz and the Secretary General of the MDP Parliamentary Group, Mohamed Rasheed Hussain.

MDP and DRP has file a case against the Elections Commission at the Civil Court saying terminating the membership of those without the fingerprint on their forms before the amendment to include was made is against the law. And the two political parties have made a request at the court to issue an order to delay the implementation of the new amendment.

But the Civil Court made a decision today that they cannot delay the implementation as decided by the Elections Commission.
