Statutory rape cases doubled this year

Maldives Police Service has said that the number of statutory rape cases reported to the Police has doubled compared to last year.

Statistics posted on the Police website shows that 74 cases of gay sex reported up to 10 November.

While 19 cases of same sex rape of children were reported in 2014, 36 cases were reported by the end of November 2015.

Statistics show that statistics show that 1374 cases of statutory rape reported in the past five years; an average of over 200 cases per year.

“Although the number of cases of statutory rape reported in 2011, 2012 and 2013 has been reduced in 2014 and 2015, not enough has changed. And in 2010, 175 such cases, in 2011, 267 cases, in 2012, 273 cases, in 2013, 244 cases, in 2014, 207 cases and by the end of this year’s November, 208 cases were reported.” Police statistics said.

Police said that aside from sexual abuse of children, although the numbers are low, negligence with children are also being reported.

And so the Police said that while 16 such cases were reported in 2010, 35 cases were reported in 2011. And in 2012, 90 cases of negligence with children were reported to the Police.

Although the numbers of such cases has been low last year, by the end November 2015, 97 cases of negligence with children were reported to the Police.

The statistics publicized on the Police website say that the number of domestic abuse against children has increased. And so 388 cases were reported in the past four years. And 173 cases were reported at the end of November this year.
