One of the biggest online shopping websites in China, Taobao has sold a Maldivian island in auction.
A Chinese media outlet Global Times reported that the island was sold at Yuan 5.76 million (USD 892,000). But the website did not say which island it was nor did they give any details on the buyer.
The Chinese website sold the island on Saturday as part of the "Double 12" shopping festival.
"When you did not get up at 9 am this morning, some rich guy spent nearly 6 million yuan to buy an island in the Maldives at an auction. Of course, even if you got up, you may not be able to afford to buy it," Taobao said on its official website.
News site gucheng.com reported that this was not the first time that Taobao sold an island. In May, islands in Fiji, Canada and Greece were auctioned off at prices of 5 million Yuan, 1.7 million Yuan and 4.8 million Yuan.
