MDP: The Government has violated the rights of the people

Opposition party MDP has said that the Government of President Abdulla Yamin Abdul Gayoom has violated the rights of the Maldivian people.

In a press release issued today marking the International Human Rights Day, MDP said that while the Government has violated the rights of the people, the whole world knows that it has also drowned the country.

The statement said that the people have lost the protection of their lives. And so while threats of losing employment, bankrupting businesses has increased immeasurably, the corruption inside the Government and state institutes have gone beyond control.

Regarding the 13-year prison sentenced being served by the former President Mohamed Nasheed, the MDP statement said that the U.N. Working Group on Arbitrary Detention concluded that the trial of the former President Nasheed was conducted outside the Maldivian constitutions and international treaties. And it said that it proves that President Yamin’s Government does not respect human rights and international treaties.
