A case has been submitted to the Prosecutor General’s (PG) Office accusing former Minister at President’s Office Mohamed Hussain Shareef (Mundhu) of corruption in the award of the catering for the official banquet by the President on the occasion of Maldives’ 50 years of Independence, to New Port Restaurant.
This has been confirmed to Sun Media by an official of the PG Office, who said that the case was received today.
Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) was unavailable for a comment at the time of publication.
The government has not commented on whether the project was announced.
Senior government officials who attended the banquet said it was of poor standard and unorganised.
The banquet was attended by foreign dignitaries including President of Sri Lanka Sirisena Maithripala.
Mundhu resigned after being notified not to report to work, shortly after the explosion on the president’s boat in September 2015.
President’s Office has not given a reason for asking Mundhu not to report to work, and President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has maintained that Mundhu is not a suspect in the boat blast incident.
