Fisheries Ministry has said that possible oil layers have been found at sea in the North East and South East in the B. Atoll.
A press statement from the Fisheries Ministry said that the JOIDES Resolution ship has now left the country after doing geological research in the Maldivian ocean border. The statement said that eight locations in the North East and South East in the B. Atoll were drilled. And during the process, an organic rich (possible oil layer) was found. The statement said that research proved that the Maldives is on a volcanic structure.
“...But the Maldives is formed on top a transitional or continental crust or (as to say) there is proof that the land where the Maldives is formed contains continental fragments.” The statement said.
The statement said that it is yet unclear which sort of gas that is coming up from the wells discovered in the geological research. But the studies for far indicates some level of methane, says the press release.
Fisheries Ministry said that hopeful finds have been discovered in the search for oil and so possible oil producing source rocks have been found in the Maldivian seas. The Ministry said that they have confirmed that something (liquid or gas) is coming up from the large pockmarks formed in the ocean.
The Ministry’s statement said that three companies are interested in working with the Maldives in the search for oil and discussions are being held following proposals from two of the companies.
