An emergency issue has been raised to bring to attention of the government to losses suffered by residents of Feydhoo and Maradhoo-Feydhoo due to flooding caused by torrential rain.
The issue was raised by Addu Atoll Meedhoo MP Rozaina Adam during People’s Majlis session held on Thursday.
The issue was accepted by Majlis for debate through the unanimous vote of all 48 members during the meeting.
MP Rozaina said that there were still many households in Feydhoo and Maradhoo-Feydhoo that were still flooded. And that many families were surviving without any way that they can cook food or sleep or use the toilet.
Debating on the issue, Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) Parliamentary Group Leader – Vilimale’ MP Ahmed Nihan Hussain Manik said that the two PPM MPs that represented Addu City - Feydhoo MP Ibrahim Didi and Hulhudhoo MP Mohamed Shahid were currently there to help with the relief effort.
He added that President Abdulla Yameen was keeping a sharp eye on the problem, and that a steering committee had been set up upon his counsel to help the residents.
South-Hithadhoo MP Hassan Nizar said that government had not addressed the problem sufficiently, and that President Yameen had yet to say anything regarding the issue.
He also stressed that Feydhoo and Maradhoo-Feydhoo were facing dire circumstances and that there were residents who could not use water from the toilet or have any way they can sleep.
Central-Hithadhoo MP Brigadier General (Retired) Ibrahim Mohamed Didi appealed for government to provide monetary assistance to residents of the two islands.
North-Hithadhoo MP Mohamed Aslam said that over 300 households in Addu City were facing damage. He called out for a quick solution – especially to the damage to sewerage systems.
Dhidhdhoo MP Abdul Latheef Mohamed said that the government would help the residents, and that government would build sewerage systems and water systems in Addu City.
Addressing comments made by opposition – Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) MPs, Deputy Leader of Maldives Development Alliance (MDA) – Kudahuvadhoo MP Ahmed Amir said that the voice of President Yameen could be heard through actions he had taken to solve the problem.
