The safe at the G.A. Kodey Council has been robbed and the island lounge has been set on fire.
President of the Kodey Island Council, Siyam Mohamed told Sun Media today that “it is unclear when the safe was broken into. But the lounge was set on fire, supposedly between 1 and 2 a.m. last night.”
Siyam said that it is believed that the robbers entered the Council Office after breaking the locks and about MVR 50,000 and a camera was stolen after breaking into the safe.
“From outside the office, no damage is visible. Then the key is with a specific person. Now the Police are questioning the staff with the Council key and other staff of the Office.” Siyam.
Councilor Siyam said that the island lounge near the harbor was destroyed beyond use from the fire.
Police Media Official said that when the fire at the island lounge made by the people of the island for the Independent 50 Football Tournament with wood and thatch was reported around 5:10 a.m., the Police went to the island this morning at 8 a.m. to investigate. And when the investigation team went to enter the Island Council, they learned of the safe robbery and the investigation of that crime has also begun.
“What was reported to the Police was the fire at the port area of a place made with wood and thatch. Then to investigate that case, Police went to enter the Council Office we learned that the safe at the place was broken into.” Media Official said.
The Police Media Official said that MVR 50,000 and a Nikon camera are missing from the safe according to the Island Council.
He said the investigation is ongoing and that no arrests have been made so far.
