President Abdulla Yameen has said that the government always works towards establishing systems to ease procedures and ensure protection for fishermen, farmers, and people in other industries.
The President made this remark while speaking at an event to mark Fisheries and Agriculture Day, held at Dharubaaruge on Thursday.
“The government no longer believes in continuous provision of subsidies. The government will always work towards establishing systems that would ease procedures and ensure protection for fishermen, farmers, and people in other industries.”
He said that considering the revenue to the government from fisheries and agriculture sectors, it is not easy to continue giving subsidies; and mechanisms are already in place to ensure that fishermen and farmers are able to cover losses.
He noted that this includes an insurance scheme which covers 90 percent of losses for farmers.
President Yameen also called on youth to join the fisheries sector.
“We have facilitated many opportunities for young fishermen, including soft loans. These loans will be available next year as well. ‘Beyas Nubeyas’ insurance scheme is also available,” he said.
