Kunahandhoo hit by heavy rain and flooding

Laamu Kunahandhoo has been hit by nonstop heavy rain since last night, which has caused flooding in many areas and caused damage to property.

Kunahandhoo Council President Lirgam Saeed told Sun Media that it has been raining in the island since 7:45 p.m. last night (Wednesday).

“…There is flooding everywhere, it’s difficult to walk on the streets. Water has entered about six houses and caused damage to property,” he said.

He added that Kunahandhoo is a low-lying island and often faces the problem of flooding.

Before the construction of a harbour, flood water in the island was drained by letting it flow to the sea at the current harbour area.

“We requested the government when the harbour was constructed, to construct two drains. Draining flood water during rainy season is very difficult now,” Lirgam said.

An agreement has been signed between Ministry of Housing and Infrastructure and Kunahandhoo Council for the construction of a proper drainage system, but the commencement of the project has been delayed.
