Motion of no-confidence against Majlis Speaker scheduled for June 5

The People’s Majlis Secretariat has said that the proposed vote of no-confidence against Majlis Speaker Abdullah Shahid has been scheduled for the 5th of coming June.

Speaking to Sun Online, Majlis Secretary General Ahmed Muhammad said today that the motion of no confidence against Majlis Speaker was scheduled for the Session on 5th June in accordance with the Majlis Regulation, and that Members have been notified of the vote.

“The matter has been included in the agenda, and Members have been notified as per the Rules of Procedure. The vote will be taken on 5th of coming June, which would be the day following the opening of Majlis for the coming session”, said the Secretary General.

The Majlis is now in recess, and will resume sessions on the 4th of June. Notification for the pending no-confidence vote against the Speaker was sent on the 19th of April.

A vote of no confidence against the Speaker was proposed by some 27 members of the Maldivian Democratic Party, on the 17th of February this year. According to Majlis Rules, when such a matter is brought before the Majlis, notice should be sent to Members, and a 10-working-day period should be given, and then the matter should be included in the agenda of the next Session of the Majlis.

MDP Members of Parliament proposed a vote of no confidence against Majlis Speaker, claiming that he “does things in Parliament without consultation with Members”. However, the Speaker has denied the claims.
