Minister of Environment and Energy Thorig Ibrahim has said that coastal protection projects are ongoing in 17 islands, for which the total cost is estimated at MVR 329 million.
Thorig made this remark at a ceremony at Ministry of Environment and Energy this morning, held to sign a contract with Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) for the construction of coastal protection structures in Gaafu Dhaalu Thinadhoo.
“Projects which will see the construction of 10.2 km coastal protection structures are ongoing in 17 islands. The total cost of these projects is estimated at MVR 329 million,” he said.
In March this year, Thorig said that MVR 350 million would be spent on the construction of 7.8 km coastal protection structures.
Highlighting the importance of coastal protection projects to fight erosion, he said that the government was conducting assessments to identify the islands most vulnerable to erosion.
The project awarded to MTCC today would see the construction of coastal protection structures in Baraasil region in Thinadhoo. The MVR 20.8 million project shall be completed within 200 days.
