MDP has held their usual Friday afternoon ‘Maldivians with Commonwealth’ march on the main streets of Male’.
The march, calling for the resignation of President Dr Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik and leaders of the government, was led by MNSL Chairman Mohamed Shareef (Senco Shareef), former Defence Minister Ameen Faisal, Parliament members, and MDP National Congress members.
The march commenced from Usfasgandu at around 17:00, and was joined by a large number of MDP supporters. They first marched on to Majeedee magu, then on to Boduthakurufaanu magu, then on to Ameenee magu, and back to Usfasgandu.
Protesters mocked President Waheed by imitating crows. A man with the wings of a crow, a man in a suit, a man who does black magic, and a rooster with a black magic necklace were among figures observed at the march. They created smoke and pretended to be involved in black magic during the protest.
There were no confrontations at today’s protest. However protesters used offensive language to address the Police who were maintaining security on the street. They also shouted ‘traitor’ in front of Police stations.
MDP holds protests every Friday afternoon since the fall of President Nasheed’s government on 7 February 2012.
