Government: Nothing related to arms in the letter to the Maltese President

The Government has said that there is not mention of an arms depot or anything related to that in the letter that President Abdulla Yamin Abdul Gayoom sent to the Maltese President.

President Yamin sent a letter to the Maltese President Marie Louise Coleiro Preca in August on the Vice President’s visit to Malta.

Spokesperson of the President’s Office, Ibrahim Muaz Ali tweeted tonight saying that the Government has not agreed with anyone to establish any foreign arms depot in the Maldives.

Muaz tweeted this at a time where some media are reporting that an arms depot is being made in H.A. Uligam.

Some media have been reporting that a Malta company, Safety At Sea Logistics Private Limited (SASL) is going to make an arms depot in H.A. Uligam with a unit consisting of 200 personnel.

They report that the purpose of the depot is to provide security for the ships travelling in the area.

Home Minister Umar Naseer has also sent out a tweet saying that on behalf of the Maldivian Government, he confirms that there is no arms depot on the island.

The home minister said that the government will not make any deals involving arms.
