The Parliament Committee on National Security (241) has held an emergency meeting and established a sub-committee, and decided to summon senior officials of Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) and Maldives Police Service.
The National Security Committee meeting held at 1:00 p.m. today was attended by 11 out of 14 members. All political parties represented in the parliament were represented in the meeting.
Chairperson of National Security Committee, Kendhikulhudhoo MP, Ali Mauroof told Sun Media that the sub-committee consists of seven members – one from Maldives Development Alliance (MDA), Jumhooree Party (JP), Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), and Adhaalath Party (AP) each, and three from Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM).
The Chairperson of the National Security Sub-Committee is Vilimaafannu MP Ahmed Nihan Hussain Manik, and Deputy Chairperson is Mauroof.
Mauroof said that officials of MNDF and the police have been summoned for between 4:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. today.
He highlighted the importance of an investigation by the National Security Committee of the explosion on the presidential speedboat, which all members believe was targeted at the President.
“Even MDP MPs such as Mariya have noted the seriousness of this incident. They have also urged to treat it as a national issue and not make it political,” said Mauroof, who was on-board the speedboat alongside the President at the time of the explosion.
He added that the sub-committee meetings would be held in secret, and details would be shared with the media by the chairperson as and when required.
