Spokesperson: Sanctions are mentioned to scare the people

Spokesperson of the President’s Office, Ibrahim Muaz Ali has said that sanctions against some of the Government officials are being mentioned by the lawyers of the former President Nasheed is to confuse the people and keep them in a state of fear.

Muaz Ali told Sun Media today that violating the rights of the people for the rights of one person is not something that President Abdulla Yamin Abdul Gayoom would do.

“That is also the best international practice. And so the international community would accept those regulations.” Spokesperson Muaz Ali said.

The Spokesperson of the President’s Office said that no changes have come to the foreign aid to the Maldives and the Government still has the relations with the foreign countries.

“There is no stop to any Government work. There has been no change to the foreign loans and generous aid.” Muaz Ali said.

Hassan Latheef, from President Nasheed’s legal team said last night that they are working on sanctions against different individuals of the Government since the Government has refused to free the former President Nasheed as per the decision by the U.N. Working Group on Arbitrary Detention saying that the sentence against the former president was against the law.
