The U.N. Working Group on Arbitrary Detention (WGAD) has said that the trial of the former President, Mohamed Nasheed proceeded unjustly and has called for the release of the former President and enforce the right to compensation.
The WGAD made the statement in a report after reviewing the case submitted by the former President’s lawyers. The report publicized by Jared Genser of the President’s legal team notes a number of things that are considered unjust during the trial.
And so the report notes that some of the judges that could affect the trial being part of the trial and not giving adequate time to prepare a defense and the former President not having a lawyer at some point of the trial.
The other thing noted by the WGAD is not giving the opportunity to assign a lawyer once the original lawyers left the case. And noted that only a few number of people were allowed inside the court room for the hearings.
The WGAD believes that the former President was deprived of a fair trial along with the right to prove his innocence.
