Minister at President’s Office Mohamed Hussain Shareef has said that the investigation is ongoing and nothing has been ruled out, following the explosion on the boat carrying President Abdulla Yameen this morning.
“Whether it was due to a problem with the engine or not, whether it was an accident or not – we still don’t know. Nothing has been ruled out; we can’t rule out anything,” he said.
He said that the investigation is being expedited, and the President is being informed on the developments.
“They will check the engine and other areas. The entire speedboat will be thoroughly checked,” he said.
He further said that President Yameen’s bodyguard Abdul Nasir suffered serious injuries in the explosion.
Abdul Nasir was first taken to the airport, and later to Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH). Details of his injuries remain unclear.
The explosion occurred as the speedboat, carrying President Yameen and First Lady Fathimath Ibrahim from the airport to Malé upon their return from the hajj pilgrimage, approached Izzuddin Jetty in Malé.
