U.N. Human Rights Commissioner calls for the release of President Nasheed

Commissioner of the United Nations Human Rights Council, Zeid Ra'ad Al Hussein has called for the release of the former President, Mohamed Nasheed.

He called for the release of the former Maldivian President during his speech at the 30th U.N. Human Rights Council meeting.

In his speech, Zeid Ra'ad Al Hussein said that moving President Nasheed back to prison from house arrest was a step backwards in the issue. He said that there are charges pending against the family of the former President as well.

But there have been no such charges pressed against them.

The U.N. Human Rights Commissioner said that the trail against the former President for the unlawful arrest of the Chief Judge of the Criminal Court, Abdulla Mohamed, was a "flawed trial."

He also called to review the charges against the protesters at the opposition rallies.

President Mohamed Nasheed was sentenced to 13 years in prison in March 2015 for ordering the abduction of the Chief Judge of Criminal Court Abdulla Mohamed in 2012 as the commander in chief, during his presidency.
