Maldives Correctional Services has denied the allegations by Jared Genser, a lawyer on the former President Mohamed’s international defense team, claiming that the former President’s cell at the prison has been “bugged.”
A statement issued by the correctional service tonight said that that they did not listen into the conversations between President Nasheed and his lawyers at Maafushi Prison.
“The accusations that says this Service (Correctional Service) and the Maldivian Government has a hand in this is strictly denied by this Service.” The statement said.
The statement from the Correctional Service said that they believe that the conversations that take place between inmates and their lawyers are protected by attorney client privilege.
In their statement, Maldives Correctional Service said that they provided an acceptable environment for President Nasheed to meet with his international lawyers.
“We guarantee by this Service that this environment is a place that these two parties can converse without revealing to anyone.” The statement from the Correctional Services said.
The Correctional Services also said that the accusation of Jared Genser has to be fully investigated and that they would be investigating it.
“In this opportunity, we would note that the results revealed by the end of this investigation would be reported by this Service.” The statement said.
It says that if they would take legal steps against those responsible if any rights of President Nasheed was violated as per Jared Gener’s accusation.
At the press conference today, Jared Genser said that a lot was discussed at the meeting with President Nasheed at Maafushi Prison today and not long after the meeting, someone called the former President’s wife and informed what was discussed at the meeting.
Jared said that, that person said that he knew what was discussed through an official in the Government.
