Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP) Council member and Thulusdhoo MP Rozaina Adam has said that the current leader of the Maldives government is President Dr Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik, and that DRP supports the government.
Rozaina made this statement in response to a question posed by Sun regarding Medhu Henveiru MP Ali Azim’s statements to the media claiming that the current government of the Maldives should be Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).
Rozaina said that following Nasheed’s resignation, the next government would be the party represented by the President, and that DRP will support the government as long as its decisions are in line with DRP policies:
“Regardless of which party the President represents, the government will be the party represented by that person. President Waheed wanted to have a unitary government. DRP supports the current government. However if the government makes a decision that DRP does not agree with, we will not support that decision.”
Azim had said that even thought President Nasheed resigned, the government of Maldives should be MDP, and that he does not believe that President Waheed can constitute a new cabinet.
Rozaina however said that as the government is President Waheed’s, he can constitute his cabinet. She added that it was DRP’s council that decided to support the current government, and that some members of the council do not support that decision.
“DRP decided to support President Waheed’s government because politically, it is the most important way for DRP just now,” Rozaina said.
