President Dr Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik has said today that the government is in discussion with political parties to review the National Commission of Inquiry (NCI).
In response to a question posed by an Indian journalist after the President’s address to the Indian Council of World Affairs, President Waheed said that the government has held discussions with Commonwealth Envoy Don McKinnon currently visiting Maldives, and agreed to review the NCI. In this regard, dialogue is currently underway with political parties to obtain advice on how the NCI can be reviewed.
“We have agreed with the Commonwealth Envoy currently in Maldives, to review the NCI. We are in discussion with political parties to obtain advice on this,” President Waheed said.
President Waheed expressed confidence that the NCI is impartial, despite the discussions with political parties which were prompted by Commonwealth’s demand. He said that the members of the NCI are independent and do not represent any one political view.
