Met Office: More tidal waves expected in Mal

Maldives Meteorological Service (Met Office) has said that tidal waves are likely in Malé and southern islands in the Maldives this afternoon as well as later tonight.

Flooding caused by high waves was experienced in the north-eastern part of Malé last night (Wednesday, 12 August 2015).

Worst affected areas include the carnival grounds and Hulhumalé Ferry Terminal, where the water that gushed in caused damage to vehicles.

Met Office weather forecaster told Sun Online today that this is likely to continue in islands south of Lhaviyani Atoll today.

Flooding is most likely during high tide, and highest tide will occur at 12:49 p.m. and 12:45 a.m. today, he said.

He added that flooding has not been reported from any other island.

The exact reason behind the surge in the waves is unknown, but some level of flooding is experienced in different regions in the country around this time every year.

Weather has improved compared to yesterday, and thunder is not expected today, the weather forecaster said.
