Former Deputy Minister for Islamic Affairs and Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Religious Council Vice President Mohamed Faroog has resigned from his post of Religious Council’s VP, and also left the party.

It has been confirmed to Sun, that recently ousted President of MDP Dr Ibrahim Didi’s elder brother, Mohamed Faroog, has sent a letter to MDP requesting to be removed from the party.

Faroog claimed that he was unhappy with several issues relating to MDP:

“I left the party because there are several things that I am unhappy about within the party. I have sent a letter today to MDP, requesting to withdraw my name from the party.”

The letter mentioned by Farooq has been leaked, a copy of which has been received by Sun. Faroog states in the letter that democracy within MDP is weak, and decisions are being made against the basic regulations of the party.

“Also, the Party President and Vice President were removed by the National Congress against the party’s basic regulations registered with Elections Commission, in an extremely irresponsible manner,” reads the letter.

He also noted that former President and leader of MDP Mohamed Nasheed had done ‘many things’ against the party’s basic regulations. Moreover, Nasheed’s confession to the media that he attempted to revise the school curriculum such that it is less religious, is not acceptable.

MDP has also confirmed that they had received Faroog’s letter requesting to be removed from the party.

Some members of MDP allege that former President Nasheed excessively influences party decisions; however, these claims are denied by some other members.
