Majlis looks into why suspect pedo teacher was allowed to leave country

People’s Majlis Government Oversight Committee has started looking into why an Indian teacher suspected of sexually abusing his students from Gaaf Alif Atoll Gemanafushi School was allowed to leave the country.

Speaking during Government Oversight Committee meeting held Wednesday morning, head of committee Vilufushi MP Riyaz Rasheed announced that they had decided to look into the reason behind why the expatriate English Language teacher was allowed to leave the country while investigation had been ongoing into sexual abuse perpetrated by the teacher.

The issue of why registry of known child sexual abusers was not released to public despite the law requiring it to be made public – an issue brought to the table by Kinbidhoo MP Abdulla Riyaz was researched and discussed among committee members during the meeting.

During the meeting Addu-Meedhoo MP Rozaina Adam suggested that relevant authorities be questioned in regard to child abuse cases.

However, no issue was called to vote during the meeting.

Ending the meeting, MP Riyaz Rasheed said that the reason why registry of known child sexual abusers were not released to public needed to be stated in writing.

While lawmakers look into reason why the Indian teacher suspected of sexual abuse on his students was allowed to leave the country, Prosecutor General’s Office has said that he was allowed to leave while police had been ordered to confiscate his passport.
