Judges of the Supreme Court prepares a new Penal Code

Judges of the Supreme Court has begun preparing a new Penal Code over the one prepared over years of hard work.

An official of Judiciary told Sun Media today that the Judges of the Supreme Court are working to draft a bill of a new Penal Code and the work is moving at a fast pace.

“The Judges of the Supreme Court is working on a draft of a new Penal Code. It would be presented to the Parliament as soon as it is completed.” The official said.

The current Penal Code in effect was first submitted at the fifth session of the first term of the Parliament on 1 April 2014.

President Abdulla Yamin Abdul Gayoom ratified the bill on 13 April 2015.

The official from the judiciary said that the Judges of the Supreme Court are not happy with the current Penal Code in effect. And so a new Penal Code is being drafted on how they want.

The Judiciary official said that the bill is to be presented to the Parliament through an MP of PPM.

There has been no response from the Supreme Court on the matter despite numerous attempts.

Prosecutor General, Muhthaaz Muhsin told Sun Media that the PG Office is ready to work under the current Penal Code. And the state prosecutors and the Police have been completely accustomed to the Penal Code.
