Manmohan calls on Maldivians to cooperate in resolving political disputes

Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has called on Maldivians to cooperate in resolving the political disputes in the country.

At the meeting held between President Dr Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, the Prime Minister spoke on the importance of all stakeholders sitting together to find a way out of the political situation peacefully.

The President spoke about the current political situation of the Maldives and the work of the Inquiry Commission. Further, he briefed the Prime Minister on the current economic situation, and the steps being taken by the government to improve the economic status. He also noted India’s cooperation in housing projects in Maldives.

Prime Minister Singh thanked the President for accepting his invitation, and extended a very warm welcome to the President. The Prime Minister stated that there were fond memories of the visit in November 2011, when he attended the SAARC Summit held in the Maldives.

President Waheed told reporters that India supported the government’s efforts to investigate the events leading up to the change of government. Referring to the handover of Male’ International Airport to GMR, the President said that regardless of changes in government, Maldives will always respect the agreements made between India and Maldives.

The President gave an interview to NDTV yesterday, and will give interviews to CNN and IBN. Interviews with Times of India, India Today, Hindustan Times, and The Daily Telegraph are also on the agenda during his visit to India.
