The official jetty has been reopened tonight as Izuddheen Jetty after major renovations for the 50th Independence Day.
At the special ceremony held at the Jetty at 9:30 p.m., the jetty was opened by the Home Minister, Umar Naseer, Minister of Defense, Moosa Ali Jaleel, the Chief of Defense Force, Ahmed Shiyam and the Commissioner of Police, Hussain Waheed.
After the reopening, senior officials of the government and ministers along with former government officials arrived at the jetty in a launch. Fireworks display was also held at the ceremony.
The first person on the new jetty was the former President, Maumoon Abdul Gayoom. The former President, Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik, President of the Parliament, Abdulla Maseeh Mohamed, Leader of MDA, Ahmed Siyaam Mohamed, the Deputy Leader of MDA, Ali Mauroof and Chancellor of the National University, Dr. Mohamed Latheef also followed President Maumoon.
After getting off at the jetty, they greeted President Abdulla Yamin and the Vice President, Ahmed Adheeb Abdul Gafoor.
Speaking at the ceremony, Chief of Defense Force, Ahmed Shiyam said that the jetty was designed as such by the wise and creative thinking of President Abdulla Yamin.
Shiyam said that the jetty was built with the assistance of the Chinese government and expressed his gratitude.
While the official jetty has been named “Izuddheen Jetty”, two of the roads in Malé City is named “Izzuddheen Magu” and “Izuddheen Hingun.” And one of the mosques is named “Izzuddheen Mosque.”
A special day is also celebrated in the Maldives as “Huravee Dhuvas” commemorating Sultan Hassan Izzuddheen. The Maldives was liberated after four months under the Malabar on Jumadil Akhir 1166.
