Air India plane tyre bursts on landing at INIA

An Air India plane narrowly escaped a serious accident, when one of its wheel tyres burst today on landing at the Ibrahim Nasir International Airport (INIA) in Malé, Maldives.

An official from the Airport told Sun that the incident occurred around 12:15 noon. He said that it was a Trivandrum-Malé-Trivandrum flight. He said that no other damage to the plane had yet been spotted, and that it was under check at the Apron of the Airport.

“There was a thunderous blast sound, and we checked the plane when it was landed, and found out that the tyre had burst”, said the official.

Incidents of plane tyre-bursting have recently become more or less frequent in the INIA. Mohamed Shamheed, the Minister of Tourism, had earlier told Sun Online that the runway at INIA had fallen into serious disrepair and that many Airlines that operated flights to Malé had filed complaints. The runway at INIA currently does not meet international standards.
