Vice President Ahmed Adeeb has said that Maldivian islanders using contaminated water for baths can only be stopped through economic development.
“As people have been voicing out using Twitter and other methods, some people still bath using contaminated water. All these problems can be solved by utilizing the economy, isn’t it?” said Adeeb.
Talk of islanders drinking and bathing using contaminated water wasn’t new news, said Adeeb.
“We weren’t the ones to force people in the atolls to drink contaminated water, or bath using contaminated water. These are all economic changes brought about to develop and fasten the pace of economic development in order to overcome all this,” he said.
“Investment opportunities will be highly controlled and provided only to huge investments,” said Adeeb, adding that shockingly huge investments were on their way.
The Vice President said that it was impossible for everyone to agree on everything and that differences existed between President Yameen’s economic vision and the opinion of others. He said that the economic changes would not be argued over looking back after the coming 50 years.
Adeeb said that 25 Maldivian islands were being developed at the moment and that while each resort was a minimum USD 30 million project, some resorts were USD 50 million and 60 million projects, and that therefore USD 700 million investment projects had been carried out in 2014. Adeeb said that the fruit of economic development was being felt by common people, mentioning pension received by elders and the reduction in dollar rate.
“Investments will come put it will be well planned and transparent,” said Adeeb.
He said that Maldivian citizens will be well informed of the investment projects when they will be discussed over at the People’s Majilis.
In answer to a question asked by Sun Online, Adeeb said that police had the authority to stop any illegal activity that may take place in any of the land that will be sold.
“Whether it be a project or resort, any place operating here will be under jurisdiction of Maldivian courts and will always be accessible to Maldivian police and Maldives National Defence Force,” said Adeeb.
Adeeb said that the changes brought by President Yameen to the economy would revolutionize the Maldivian economy.
