As the republic Square reopens after major renovations tomorrow night, Maldives Transport and Contracting Company, (MTCC) who is in charge of renovations has said that there is no guarantee that the jetty would be completed.
CEO of MTCC Ibrahim Abdul Razzaq Haleem told Sun Media tonight that the project has been delayed due to bad weather. Since there are welding works to be done on the upper part of the jetty, Haleem said that no work was done yesterday and today due to bad weather.
“The upper structure of the jetty can be completed as the weather allows. While there is a lot of welding work there, when it rains with strong winds like this, it is not that easy. I don’t think there is a gurantee that it can be completed by tomorrow night.” Haleem said.
He said that the target of the company is to complete the project as soon as possible and hand it over to the government.
The government contracted MTCC to demolish the old jetty and build a modern one in place for the 50th anniversary of Maldivian independence.
CEO of MTCC says that the new jetty would be a more spacious and cultural jetty but he did not give any details of the design.
The Housing Ministry said today that the Republic Square is scheduled to be officially reopened at 8:45 p.m. tomorrow night with a flag raising ceremony.
